New For 2008

Hard to believe it is already time for an update! Once again, we have tried with some success to find new plants to offer for the 2008 season. Lilies, lotus and marginals….there is something new to be found in each area. Perhaps most exciting are the exclusive offerings of some hybrids by the Australian hybridizer, Charles Winch.

N. 'Blue Aster'

Nymphaea ‘Blue Aster' is a lovely blue/purple tropical day bloomer, created by Charles Winch and selected as ‘Best New Lily of the Year' in the IWGS competition for 2005.

Nymphaea ‘Charles Winch' has a large, pure white flower with petals that are slightly rolled when mature. This lily is considered by many to be the best of the white tropicals.

N. 'Charlie's Pride'
Nymphaea ‘Charlie's Pride' is also available for this year. A gorgeous lily by Charles Winch, this is the closest to being a true "red" day bloomer than any other lily I am aware of.

Nymphaea ‘Sunshine' is a rich yellow tropical with speckled pads from Charles Winch. The flowers get huge and I doubt there is a deeper yellow tropical lily available.

Nymphaea ‘Avalanche' will be available this year. This lily is a Luster Aquatic introduction that has clear, light blue petals and a white ‘pom-pom' center. The pads are heavily mottled in maroon. ‘Avalanche' was selected as ‘Best New Lily' for 2006 in the IWGS new waterlily competition.

Nelumbo 'Yaechawanbasu'
You will notice an increase in the selection of lotus. The Japanese varieties
are exceptional plants and links to pictures of more varieties can be found
on our Hardy Lilies & Lotus page.

Hibiscus coccineus
'Summer Snow'
In marginal plants there are also quite a few plants that are either new or at least new to us. In the tropical section we have added a white form of the Red Swamp Hibiscus that is named ‘Summer Snow' and is hardy to zone 7. Another Taro has also been added, Colocasia ‘Black Beauty'. This sport of the Imperial Taro is without a doubt the most attractive of the ‘Black' Taro.

Colocasia antiquorum
'Black Beauty'

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides
Crystal Confetti Pennywort
For Hardy marginals, we have added Thalia dealbata, the hardy or powdery Thalia. Crystal Confetti Pennywort is a beautiful variegated dwarf pennywort that fills in quickly. There is a native pink Hibiscus available as well and it is hardy to zone 5.

Hibiscus laevis
Hardy Pink Hibiscus

We have been able to supply pedigreed Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrids' for a few
years now, but this year we are excited to also have the two species V. cruziana and V. amazonica available with pedigree lot numbers. All Victoria will be tagged with a ‘Truly Named' tag and the appropriate lot number, so the pedigree can be traced at www.victoria-adventure.org.

Please be sure to check our other web site pages for pictures and brief cultural suggestions for marginal plants. Any other plants we may add can also be found there, along with the weekly availability list.
